Regina Wamba the Owner of Mae I Designs Photography
Who is Regina?
Well, I’m a no sock wearing harry potter nerd who just enjoys life in simplicity. :D I grew up all over, but I call home Boise Idaho. I love the outdoors and I love my friends and family. I hope to be personable, honest and positive in all things I do. I have been married 8 years and have three kids. I own Mae I designs and Photography.
I was recently blessed to be able to sit down with Regina, to learn more about her and her work. And let me tell you, Regina on a personal level is just as amazing as her designs.
Derinda: What is the very first book you did a cover for?
Regina: ROCKET by Bruce Werre
Derinda: Do you feel, that the cover for a book, is just as important as the story?
Regina: Absolutely. I think if you plan on spending MONTHS writing, Editing, and putting all blood and sweat and tears into your book, a cover worth viewing to your potential readers is SO important. It’s the first thing they see. I want to make that impact
Regina: hmmm…. Good question! Well, there will always be great books by great authors. But to be completely honest. Harry Potter gripped my heart and swung me into a world I’ve always wanted to be a part of. At a younger age when I started that series…I am so proud to say that the imagination poured into that book is so inspiring. Hope, magic, imagination… I think as a creative, that made the most impact in my life.
Derinda: Do you have to read every book, prior to making the cover?
Regina: No. LOL. I would have no time for design. I love reading, but I like to keep that aside from work.
Regina: No. LOL. I would have no time for design. I love reading, but I like to keep that aside from work.
Derinda: Other then being a famous designer for book covers, what else do you do?
Regina: LOL Famous? Hardly.*Blushes* I do photography, and every now and again I’ll drag out the pencils, canvas or pastels. :D
Derinda: What is the hardest part of designing a cover for the Author?
Regina: That all varies on the author and their ideas… sometimes it’s the titling which has to also reflect the interior of the book. Sometimes its finding the right imagery to really make the book stand out. But this varies a lot from story to story, author to author.
Derinda: Do you have a favorite cover, that you favor most, that you have did?
Regina: hmmm.. well I don’t know about a favorite, but I’ll tell you that The Coincidence of Callie and Kayden is a personal venture that sits close to the heart. I did research, asked questions, went shopping, hired the models, took the photo, and then made the book cover. It was an intense ride, and I love the outcome. I got to start that cover from concept to completion!
Derinda: Has there ever been a request for a book cover that has shocked you?
Regina: LOL, not really SHOCK, but more of… WHY? Why would you want that on a cover?
Derinda: How did you feel, when one of the covers you did for a book make it to NYT Best Selling list?
Regina: Elated and Proud. It’s a great feeling to know that everyone is seeing that cover.
Regina: STUDY. STUDY. STUDY. Graphic Design for covers is a niche market. Study your market well. Practice and stay positive. You can do it.

A comment from The New York Times Best Selling Author Jessica Sorenson
I accidentally stumbled across Regina about a year and a half ago when I got an email from another author. She’s pretty much done my covers ever since then and she’s always able to capture each story beautifully. I swear I’m like a kid a Christmas time every time I get an email from her.
It’s not just her art, though, that makes her truly amazing. She’s also a genuinely nice person and really does care that the cover turns out the way that you want it to (although, I usually fall in love with them from the very first take :)). I consider myself very lucky that I decided to click on the link to her website when it showed up in my messages. So thank you Regina for being the awesome artist and person that you are and for putting up with my insane schedule ;). You’re like Wonder Woman. Seriously.

Regina is seriously amazing. And not just because she designs my covers -- I think I have fallen in love with every cover I've seen in her portfolio. :) She has mad talent and she is an absolute joy to work with!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful work! I saw the cover above for Coincidence of Callie and Kayden, but didn't know who made the cover.
ReplyDeleteI thought it was one of the most beautiful that I've seen.
Awww, what a nice post. Regina in my artist also and I am just HONORED that she has the time to work with me and can capture what I am trying to portray with words in a picture. She's a genius and well, I feel like God put her in my path for a reason! You guys rock! XO
ReplyDeleteI can't even begin to tell you how fantastic I think Regina is. Her ability to take a few words and run with it, then deliver work that has the ability to take your breath away. It makes you want to ask, "how did you know exactly what I wanted." I can't wait to work with her again in the future and hope that she will have time in her schedule to do me that honor.
ReplyDelete<3 Thanks guys! I am so honored to be here and to have such awesome clients!
ReplyDeleteRegina is simply AMAZING! She puts up with all of us who are neurotic and emotional, lol. She is a true genius when it comes to capturing the life of a story in one single image. I'm so honored to have one of her amazing designs for my cover! <3
